IWEEE 2012 Granada

As we announced in the last few months, on January 11th. and 12th. the 5th edition of IWEEEin Granada took place. This edition was hold during the 2012 OSWC (Open Source World Conference) in Granada.

What can I say about this edition?! I really believe that, since the first one, we have gone a long long way. This edition was a little bit different from the previous ones: all the presentations were on the 11th.(speakers program) and on the 12th. the Round Table - Unconference took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Granada, during the 2012 Open Source World Conference (OSWC).

The speeches were interesting and really gave space to a great debate on the next day. The idea of IWEEE has always been that of being a space to create new ideas and reflexions. Both speakers and public are always more than welcome to participate with questions, thoughts, solutions, projects ...

The IWEEE meetings are growing each year. Thanks to the contribution of each participant in the Unconference - Round Table, we could analyze the real use of free software in the e-health sector and create a set of tasks for each participant, in order to work on them and give some real solutions for the next edition.

Strangely there were no representatives from the Andalusian Autonomous Government (Junta de Andalucia) ... We hope to see you at the next edition.

We know that cooperation between individuals, public administrations and governments in adopting Free Software in public health is the key for all of us to have access to good quality health care. This is GNU Solidario mission: Health and Education with Free Software.

Speakers Program IWEEE 2012 Granada: Commitment

On January 11th. 2012 Granada (Spain) will host the 5th edition of IWEEE: International Workshop on e-Health for Emerging Economies.

The event will take place in the Hotel Citymar San Anton in the Hall Moraima. The conferences will start at 9 AM with the Opening Session by Luis Falcón of GNU Solidario.

We are still receiving confirmations from international speakers. The program is pretty much closed down, but if you are interested to give a speech, please send us a mail ASAP. So far we can count with participants from different international organizations.

As always, an important part of IWEEE is the Round Table. This year we have been invited to be part of the International Conference of Free Software that will be held at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos of Granada on January 12th - 2012.

So in this edition the Round Table, that this year will be an "Unconference" (in order to create the best collaborative environment for new ideas and projects) will take place in the morning of January 12th. as part of the International Conference of Free Software.

The next edition will be held in Granada (Spain) on January 11, 2012. The slogan for the 2012 is going to be: "Commitment". It's time for individuals, public administrations and governments to adopt Free Software in public health, so we can all have access to good quality health care.

On December 5th. in the city of Buenos Aires (Argentina) GNU Solidario welcomed a delegation of members from the Lomonosov Moscow State University - Faculty of Medicine (Russia) and from ARMIT (Association of Developers of Software for Healthcare System).

The Russian Delegation, lead by Prof. Oleg Medvedev, (VD, Ph.D) Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology. Prof. Oleg got in touch with Luis Falcón, of GNU Solidario, around a month ago. He was coming to Argentina and wanted to learn more about the Organization of the National Health Care System in Argentina.

Thanks to the help and organization of the Universidad Barceló, the Russian Delegation could get a guided tour at the Dr. Cosme Argerich Hospital.

At the Dr. Cosme Argerich Hospital, Dr. José Luis Ciucchi, Dr. Oscar Regalado and Lic. Viviana Rousseaux were in charge of the visit. The 33 delegates with the members from GNU Solidario and the Universidad Barceló were received in the main hall and then started a very interesting tour, beginning with an institutional video about the hospital.

After that, in order to have a better idea of the hospital care system and organization, the visit continued to the laboratory, hospital rooms, main kitchen, rehab and traumatology, emergency room, operating rooms. The tour at the Hospital ended with a visit to the Museum and with a delicious lunch.

We would like to give a special thanks to the Dr. Cosme Argerich Hospital of Buenos Aires and all the people involved in the organization for their hospitality. It was a great and very rewarding experience.

The university also gave us a chance to visit the Nutrition Department, the Library, the Anatomy Lab, the Anatomy Museum, different labs and a classroom.

It has been a very intensive day, full of emotions and knowledge. We were honored to meet Prof. Oleg and its delegation. We are pretty sure this is going to be the first step for future knowledge and business exchanges.

El sábado regresamos de Paraguay, donde fuimos invitados por el Gabinete Civil de la Presidencia de la República (Nicolás Caballero - Coordinador de Innovación Tecnológica - ) y por el departamento de informática del Instituto de Previsión Social ( Ana Ayala - CIO de la Dirección Informática - y Rosa González - Líder del departamento informático de Salud - ), para presentar GNU Health , el sistema Libre de Gestión Hospitalaria y de Salud.

Me alegra ver como Paraguay adopta Software Libre en sus sistemas de Salud Pública , en equipo, desde el Gabinete de la Presidencia, el Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS) y el Ministerio de Salud Pública y Bienestar Social (MSPBS).

Actualmente Paraguay encara la informática médica como un bien público, inseparable del contexto de Salud Pública.

El Doctor Nurhizam Safie, de la Universidad de las Naciones Unidas, Instituto Internacional de Salud Global (UNU-IIGH), partner de GNU Solidario, nos mostró implementaciones de GNU Health en Asia, África y Latinoamérica.

Nurhizam enfatizó el compromiso de las UNU - el brazo académico de las Naciones Unidas - con GNU Health y su posible implementación en el sistema de salud pública de Paraguay, como medio de universalidad la salud. Al día de hoy, la Universidad de las Naciones unidas provee capacitación en GNU Health.

Rosa González, líder del departamento de sistemas informáticos de salud, nos llevó a recorrer los distintos centros de salud, y sus departamentos. Entre ellos: Farmacia, Laboratorio, citas, hospitalización y diagnóstico por imágenes.

Rosa explicó a su equiopo la licencia GPL ( GNU General Public License), por lo que ellos tienen toda la libertad de usar y parametrizar GNU Health con el fin de adecuarlo a sus necesidades. Recalqué la importancia de trabajar con la comunidad, porque ellos son parte de la comunidad y aportarán valor agregado al proyecto. GNU Health es el resultado del esfuerzo de equipos multi-disciplinarios y multi-culturales.

El viernes al mediodía fuimos invitados por la Dra. Graciela Gamarra, Directora General de Información Estratégica en Salud, del Ministerio de Salud Pública y Bienestar Social. Julio Galeana nos mostró los desarrollos que ha realizado el ministerio en software libre en epidemiología.

Conversamos sobre la posibilidad de integrar los sistemas actuales con GNU Health, y su enlace con el sistema de epidemiología actual.

GNU Health at Paraguay Ministry of Public Health

I just got back from Paraguay, where we were invited by Mr. Nicolás Caballero from the Paraguayan Government to talk about GNU Health at the Social Security Institute (IPS - Instituto de Previsión Social ) and Ministry of Public Health .

It's great to see how Paraguay is adopting Free Software in the Public Health System, working as a team, from the presidency office, the Social Security Institute (IPS) and the Ministry of Public Health (MSPBS).

I noticed how the government conceives Health informatics as a public good, an integral component of Public Health.

We spent two non-stop days in Asunción, capital of Paraguay, visiting the different health centers and having meetings with health officials. In those meetings, Nicolas Caballero explained the latest and concrete resolutions that the Paraguayan government is taking on Free Software adoption in public health care.

After visiting the different health centers, we had a meeting with the information system team, with whom we discussed the technical details about GNU Health, such as the programming environment, security, scalability and reporting.

Dr. Nurhizam Safie, from the United Nations University, Institute of Global Health explained the partnership with GNU Solidario, and implementation cases of GNU Health in Asia, Africa and Latinamerica.

Nurhizam stressed the commitment of the UNU - the academic branch of the United Nations - with GNU Health and the implementation in the Paraguayan Public Health system, as a way of delivering universality in health care. Today UNU provides training and capacity building in GNU Health implementations.

Ms. Rosa González, Social Security Institute chief of the informatics department, gave us an extensive tour throughout different health institutions and their departments. Among them: Pharmacy, Laboratory, Appointments, Inpatient administration and Imaging.

Rosa explained to her team that GNU Health is licensed under GPL, the GNU General Public License, so they have all the freedom to use and custumize GNU Health to fit their needs. I stressed the importance of working with the community, so the health informatics team can always ask questions in public forums and share with us their developments and bug fixes. GNU Health is the result of many contributions and feedback from an international community and multi-disciplinary teams.

On Friday afternoon we were invited by Dr. Graciela Gamarra, General Director of Strategic Health Information Systems, from the Health Ministry (Ministerio de Salud Pública y Bienestar Social). They showed us their current epidemiology systems that are being built on Free Software.

We also discussed on integrating all the current systems with GNU Health, and link it to the current epidemiology engine.

Taking a break

I want to thank the government of Paraguay for inviting us and for the hospitality, they made us feel at home.

But most importantly, I want to thank the government of Paraguay for the commitment with Free Software in Public Health. Latin America is today a leader in the adoption of Free Software in public administrations, delivering equity and universality in health care for their habitants.

Last but not least, thanks to Richard Stallman, who referred GNU Health to Nicolás Caballero , chief technology innovation officer of the Presidency office. Thanks Nicolás for making this possible !

GNU Health at AfriHealth 30 November-1 December 2011

AfriHealth was first held in 2007 to bring together researchers, medical practitioners and ICT personnel to share information on the developments in the use of ICT to improve healthcare in Africa. We have in the past addressed the use of ICT to improve patient safety and enhance healthcare delivery in Africa.

AfriHealth 2011 will focus on current research, development and implementation of ICT technology and resources in the African Healthcare arena. A key objective of the conference, now in its fourth year, will be to share knowledge and experience from practical mobilization of ICT-based healthcare systems and projects, to showcase best practice through practical case studies and highlight potential for scaling up success stories at national and regional levels (more info: http://aitecafrica.com/event/view/74)

In this year edition, Dr. Nurhizam Safie, from the United Nations University, International Institute of Global Health (UNU-IIGH), Faculty of Medicine, National University of Malaysia will give a workshop about Open Source Healthcare Information Systems and will talk about their experience with GNU Health and why it was chosen by the United Nations University.

At AfriHealth will also participate Dr Christoph Larsen, synaLinQ, Vietnam & Kenya (a very active member of the GNU Health community). He will be giving a speech on Addressing the fragile environment of e-health in resource-limited settings.

This afternoon, in the context of the VI Jornadas Universitarias de Sistemas de Información en Salud (Hospital Italiano, Buenos Aires), GNU Solidario participated with a presentation of GNU Health.

GNU Solidario was invited in order to present GNU Health on the 26th. Luis Falcón gave an introductory speech about the ONG, the projects and GNU Health.

At the presentation participated also Cesar Brod (Coordinator of the Brazilian Public Software Portal, Ministry of Planning, Brazil), who explained how they met and how Luis`s work ,with GNU Solidario, contribuited to the spread of Free Software, Education and Health.

The introductory speeches created the perfect atmosphere for a round table that was animated by a strong participation from the public ! There were people from the Argentinian government, from Brazilian Ministry of Health, medical professionals from different hospitals, universities and IT specialists.

GNU Health 1.4.1 released

GNU Solidario is happy to announce the release of GNU Health 1.4.1, in which we have incorporated support for PyPI, the Python Package Index

This version is compatible with the latest tryton release (2.2.0). Now GNU Health is also a set of python modules, fully integrated to the Python community.

Thanks to the magic of pip, and the help of the Tryton community ( Cedric Krier, et al ), installing the latest GNU Health version is as easy as running

pip install --user trytond_health_profile

This will install the requirements ( the tryton server and all the standard GNU Health modules ) automatically and in your "$HOME/.local" directory. I will be updating the installation process at the wiki today.
The main site is the GNU Savannah where all the development and discussion takes place.

There are many improvements, bug fixes and news features, some of them :

New Version Tryton 2.2

The Tryton team is happy to announce the 2.2 release of Tryton.

The changes on the user interface are once again really important:

The pop-up windows are now "no modal", which means that they are linked to the tab in which they were opened. Creating a new tab is now possible. Also, switching from one tab to the other restores the state of the opened pop-up windows.
The search widget has been completely redesigned. We are now using a unique widget which allow users to use the search function in a much more natural way using a simple syntax. An auto-completion system has been included to help users write their search query.
The action toolbar on the bottom of the screen has been merged with main toolbar.
The user experience has been improved by using the same design from the Many2Many and One2Many widgets.

We are very happy to announce that Dr. Alexandre Aguiar is the New Project Leader of GNU Health in Brazil.

Dr. Aguiar participated at the last edition of IWEEE Brazil - Latinoware 2011.

He will be giving a presentation at the II Encontro Nacional do Tecnologia do Informaçao do SPB (Brasilia, Oct. 25-27, 2011). The event is organized by the Ministerío do Planejamiento, Ministerío das Cidades and the Secretaria de Relacoes Institucionais of Brazil.

Dr. Alexandre Aguiar was born in 1962.

He graduated from Medicine School in 1986 at the Universidade Federal Fluminense.

He completed his Residency in Surgery and Pediatric Surgery in 1991, Escola Paulista de Medicina (Universidade Federal de São Paulo).

He graduated in Computer Science, 1996 from Fundação Alvarez Penteado

He has worked and published in Public Health programs, Pediatric Surgery, Emergency and Trauma Surgery, Medical Informatics, Clinical Research, Biostatistics (and he still does !).

GNU Health Calendar Module

We have just released the Calendar Module for GNU Health.

This module allows appointments to be viewed from any calendar client that supports the CalDAV protocol, like Sunbird/Iceowl, Thunderbird/Icedove, iPhone or Android Clients.

Doctors can use this tool from a desktop computer, notebook or mobile device to manage their appointments. The calendar can also be used by the receptionist to visualize all the doctor's appointments and make suew that different patients were not being scheduled at the same time.

Thanks to the Tryton team for the CalDAV support.

In my recent post The importance of donating to open source projects (and a giveaway), I called for donations to one of my favorite open source projects, Bohdi Linux. I also ran a poll to see where members stand as far as donating to open source is concerned (Figure A). After I wrote that post, I realized there were many other outstanding open source projects that deserved a bit of attention. So I thought I would take a moment to list 10 projects I feel could use a little help. These projects range in target audience and scope — I wanted to cover as much ground as possible. Certainly, some of the projects listed are more in need than others, but each of them could use a bit of financial support ...

4: GNU Health
There are a couple of open source tools for hospitals, but GNU Health is one of the finest. With this application, hospitals get a strong focus in both family and primary health care, as well as on socioeconomics (housing conditions, substance abuse, etc.), prescriptions, billing, and patient genetic and hereditary risks. GNU Health offers an outstanding patient records section, along with imaging, appointments, and much, much more.

Latinoware's participants cannot imagine having a Maddog-Free Latinoware. The godfather of free and open source software, the one responsible for sparking the first port of Linux outside the Intel's 386 processor family and one of the main visionaries in the IT industry is coming again to Latinoware where, again, he will be followed by a hurd of picture takers. Probably the main reasons Jon "maddog" Hall (president of Linux International and one of the leaders of the Cauã Project) always attracts crowds to his talks are, at the same time, his eternal evangelism words and the ability of opening the eyes of people for new and exciting opportunities with free and open technologies. In this interview, Maddog answers some thought provoking questions asked by his long time friend, the program coordinator of Latinoware, Cesar Brod.

Cesar Brod: People coming every year to Latinoware already expect your presence in the event and, as usual, you will have again a big crowd watching your talk. It is being now more than ten years since you first came to Brasil to talk about free and open source software. What do you believe people really get and what do you think people still don't get at all in relation to free and open source software?

Maddog: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." - Abraham Lincoln. I point out that the phrase "people still don't get at all" is a problem, because I to think that many people "get" some of the points of Free Software some of the time, but most people do not "get" all of the points all of the time.

For some people "Free Software" is something they can pull down of the Internet and use to solve their problems without having to pay a royalty or a license fee. In many countries this argument has little pull, since they do not pay for a lot of their software.

For others, such as developers or enterprise people, Free Software represents software that they can get bug fixes or extensions for quickly so they can continue working. Or use their own extensions to develop a better solution than their competitor.

For trainers and consultants it means that by studying the software and the source code to that software they can be just as expert in that software as the person (or people) that wrote it, and therefore command a premium for their services.

For governments Free Software represents a way to keep their brightest and best university-trained programmers in their own country instead of having them migrate other places where they can get good jobs developing software. Free Software means potential longevity of a solution to the government's needs, and to maintain sovereignty over their own computing systems, safe from embargoes or privacy violations from another country's government.

I often try, in my mind, to extend the present day to the far future. What would happen if we had seven billion people using our systems of today? Would the queue at the help line be five days long, or only three? Would I get 500 patches to wade through on "Patch Tuesday", or would the vendor also patch on Thursdays in the future?

For certain people, like myself, who have had the misfortune of seeing the computer industry evolve from one of service to one of products, and the luxury of having the time to look into the future to a day when we have to meet the needs of another five billion "desktop" users....we can see how computer products as we know them will fail, and software built on good service will be the key to delivering the next five billion "desktops". ....

Developing countries NOT in the OpenERP agenda

This is a segment of the letter from Doctor Christoph Larsen, in April 2011, who was working in Rwanda and asked OpenERP for the upgrade scripts and OpenERP refused to give it to them. Dr. Larsen gave me his permission to publish it, so the community knows his point of view.

When Dr.Larsen sent me the mail, I started the migration to GNU Health in the Tryton environment. And no, this is no FUD, this is the reality of was has become of OpenERP.

[..] Please do realise that our group speaks an entirely different language: We do not target the profit-making market, and regarding the combination of OpenERP's Medical module, the underlying OpenERP backbone for health facility management and Bika Health, we are actually talking LDCs = read: Least Developed Countries. There is no money for any such partnerships, warranties and the like. People out there are haoy to learn from each other, and you will be surprised how keen they ARE to learn. BUT: A few thousand Euros for warranties (imagine a governmental multi-user installation!) - no way!!! In fact, I can tell you from my very own experience with various East and Central African governments that such upgrade path is an exclusion criterion in public tenders. Many governments, after having been burnt by numerous First World approaches to software expressively demand full and complete ownership, which includes control over the upgrade path. I cannot blame them, because, contrary to common belief in the West, there is no money left on the table, if we charge less for more. Instead, something might actually - in the end - arrive at the bottom end, for the patients' and grassroot's benefit.
A different market altogether. I would be delighted to see OpenERP provide the script, and with capable people like Luis, various other groups, the South African Bika team and myself, we might well figure out a beautiful and lively howto, how to go from verison 5 to 6, and further on. As you talked of 7 emails, by remote control, only, it is certainly easily doable! This is not a request for free services, but for transparency, and, yes, NO lock-in. At present, the Rwandan biomedical equipment management data are, in fact, locked in, into version 5. You may understand that this, and your change of policy, does not make such end user institutions happy. This also has serious consequences for users of the Medical module. It is utterly unthinkable that users (especially those in poor settings) cannot upgrade to a new version, and risk losing all they last version's data, without dishing out a few thousand Euros.Your input and an, as I most strongly believe, urgently required reconsideration of your strategy, are highly welcome.

I'm pleased to announce GNU Health 1.3.3

This version could be considered a milestone in itself, due the major changes and new features:

New naming convention of modules and models. From medical to gnuhealth
New installation scripts (setup.py) .
Major improvements in the Laboratory module. Now we have automatic visual alerts, possibility to exclude analytes from the analysis, qualitative and quantitative testing. Contextualize results in the patient status (gender, age, comorbidities ... ).

We are getting ready for the next IWEEE Brazil 2011 en Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil

IWEEE 2011 Brazil will be held during Latinoware in Itaipu, Brazil on October 19-21 - 2011. In the next few days we will publish the new slogan for the event and more information.

IWEEE is not a pure technical conference. It will focus on the human factor and in raising awareness about the actual situation. We will discuss the tools that we can provide today to doctors and institutions to improve their habitants health and education.

The workshop promotes Free Software as one of the main pillars for a sustainable framework for providing e-health and education for the developing and least developed countries.

GNU Health at CISL 2011 - English version -

On Friday September 9th, at the CISL 2011,Luis Falcón presented his speech about GNU Health.

The presentation, clear and concise, gave space to questions from the public at the end of it.

Richard Stallman, who at the end of August appointed GNU Health a sa GNU Official Package, was present at the speech and exchanged words with Luis and the audience.

He also gave some tips as: "Do not use Windows that is malevolent, the iPod is iBad and do not put my photos on Facebook! "

Viernes 23 y Sábado 24 de Septiembre se celebrará la Conferencia del lenguaje Python 2011 (PyCon) en la ciudad de Junín.

En el marco de esta conferencia, Sebastián Marró e Ignacio Parszyk de Thymbra, presentarán "GNU Health sobre Tryton Framework".

Esta fue mi respuesta a Richard después de que anunciara que GNU Health es un paquete oficial GNU.

Que GNU Health sea un paquete oficial GNU significa que es Software Libre en el mas amplio sentido del termino. No solo significa que se pueda utilizar libremente, si no que proporciona libertad al usuarios y que no tiene locks digitales.

En el campo de la Salud este concepto es mucho mas importante. Los Sistemas de Salud e Información Hospitalario tienen que ser un bien publico, que no dependan de la voluntad de una empresa. Tienen que ser libre de cualquier lock-ins, para que el usuario que tiene el software pueda utilizarlo, adaptarlo y actualizarlo cuando lo necesite.

Por esta razón eligimos a Tryton como framework para GNU Health. Un proyecto basado en la comunidad, libre de especuladores.

Quiero agradecer a Richard Stallman y al GNU project, especialmente Karl Berry, por incluir GNU Health y ayudarnos en el proceso de inscripción.

Después de varios meses de trabajo, acabo de subir la ultima versión de desarrollo de GNU Health, versión 1.3.0 !

Esta versión tiene muchas mejoras y, la mas importante, es que es compatible con
Tryton. De hecho esta es una muy buena noticia para la comunidad del Software Libre. Ahora todos pueden utilizar GNU Health sabiendo que hay una opción libre (libertad) en todo lo que se relaciona con el software (ERP, Database y Sistema Operativo).

GNU Health 1.3.0 en Tryton y en Debian/GNU Linux . Pantallazo de Genética

Esta versión de desarrollo es ideal para ver las ultimas funciones y tener un anticipo de lo que se viene en Diciembre, cuando se liberará la versión estable 2.0.

Algunas de las nuevas características de esta versión son:

Soporte completo en Tryton
Nuevo script de configuración para automatizar la instalación
Nuevo modulo de Pediatría, incluyendo neonatología

Academia GNU Health en la Universidad de Naciones Unidas

Finalmente he encontrado un momento para resumir la Academia GNU Health que se impartió en la Universidad de Naciones Unidas (UNU) en Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) durante la ultima semana de Junio. El workshop fue un gran éxito y me la he pasado muy bien en Kuala Lumpur !

El workshop se llevó a cabo en el International Institute of Global Health (IIGH), en donde he tenido la oportunidad de capacitar el equipo de las Naciones Unidas sobre GNU Health, tanto en la parte funcional como en la técnica.

Participantes de la Academia GNU Health, Luis Falcón, y los directivos de la Universidad de Naciones Unidas en el edificio International Institute of Global Health

En el workshop, se trabajó en la instalación y parametrización de GNU Health, así como con conceptos de implementación.

También se mostraron los nuevos desarrollos y GNU Health en Tryton, una plataforma muy solida, escalable y, lo mas importante, completamente libre y basada en la comunidad.

GNU Health: Training 2011 Naciones Unidas (Malaysia)

Como había anunciado anteriormente, en la última semana de Junio empezó el Asian Tour de GNU Health.

Luis Falcón impartió el Training Oficial de GNU Health en la Universidad de Naciones Unidas (UNU) en Kuala Lumpur.

Ha sido una experiencia muy enriquecedora tanto en el plano personal como profesional. Ni las cenizas ni la burocracia pudieron parar este proyecto !

Estoy contento de anunciar que la Academia GNU Health se estrenará el próximo 27 de Junio 2011 con un anfitrión muy especial: United Nations University (UNU), en Kuala Lumpur.

La UNU International Institute for Global Health (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) lleva a cabo la investigación, el desarrollo de capacidad y la difusión de conocimiento relacionada a temas claves de la salud humana. El objetivo es contribuir con el desarrollo y el refuerzo de marcos de servicios de salud y medidas de política de gestión, particularmente para las personas en países en desarrollo y para apoyar la implementación del enfoque preventivo y de promoción para la salud humana [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_University ]

Estaré formando el personal de la UNU, que es nuestro partner en Asia. La UNU - IIGH se encargará de formar los profesionales de la salud locales en el uso de GNU Health, el Sistema libre de Gestión Hospitalaria y de Información de Salud.

Como he dicho en otro blog, este es otro ejemplo de como el Software Libre puede aprovechar los recursos para ayudar los países en desarrollo. Mi agradecimiento al Sr. Nurhizam Safie Mohd Satar, quien encabeza el proyecto de integración de GNU Health (AKA Medical) en United Nations University - International Institute for Global Health (IIGH).

Tenemos grandes noticias para los defensores del Software Libre !!

Hemos empezado a trabajar en la ampliación de MEDICAL en apoyo de Tryton ERP. Tryton es un ERP con una gran filosofía del Software Libre, no sólo por tener el código fuente libre si no también para tener una política de NO LOCK-IN. Esto es lo que vamos a conseguir:

- Libertad de elección: ahora el usuario tendrá total libertad en el Sistema Operativo, Base de Datos o ERP. El usuario podrá elegir entre OpenERP o Tryton.

- Upgrades Garantizados: MEDICAL debe basarse en una arquitectura que permita al usuario actualizar su infraestructura. Los usuarios y los centros de salud deben poder contar con las herramientas de actualización y documentación para actualizar el sistema operativo, base de datos y ERP sin costo si así lo desean. Es por eso que lo vemos en GNU / Linux, PostgreSQL y Tryton. Este esquema garantiza que el usuario final tenga la versión más actualizada de MEDICAL.

- Independencia del proveedor: Nosotros, como comunidad, para el futuro de MEDICAL (o de cualquier otra solución de software libre) no podemos depender de un único proveedor o de un grupo de proveedores. MEDICAL no pertenece a Thymbra. MEDICAL es parte de una organización sin fines de lucro: GNU Solidario, que no se puede comprar y no puede caer en manos de especuladores.

- Volver a las raíces: Tenemos que volver a los orígenes del software libre. Como ya he dicho, no se trata sólo de "código abierto", sino también de comunidad y ética.

Es por eso que ahora creo que tenemos el escenario perfecto para la libertad de elección, la independencia del proveedor, políticas de NO LOCK IN, comunidad y evolución. Estos factores garantizan la continuidad de MEDICAL para la versión actual y para todas las próximas.

Por supuesto vamos a seguir desarrollando MEDICAL para que tenga la misma funcionalidad en todos los ámbitos (OpenERP, Tryton, GNU / Linux, FreeBSD ...).

Hoy es un gran día para MEDICAL y para el Software Libre !

I have great news for the Free Software advocates.

We have started working in extending MEDICAL to support the Tryton ERP. Tryton is a great ERP with a solid free software philosophy, not only for releasing the source code, but by having NO LOCK-IN policies. So this is what we will achieve

- Freedom of choice : Now the user will have complete freedom in Operating System, Database or ERP . The user will be able to choose from OpenERP or Tryton.

- Guarantee Upgrades : MEDICAL must rely on an architecture that allows the user to upgrade their infrastructure. The users and health centers should have the upgrade tools and documentation to update the operating system, database and ERP at no cost if they choose to do. Today we see that concept in GNU/Linux, Postgresql and Tryton. This schema guarantees that the end user has the best and most updated MEDICAL version, as well as the underlining components.

In this sense, we, as a community, will always be vigilant to any lock-in strategy in the underlying software (operating system, database or ERP) that could compromise its sustainability.

Many organizations around the world have chosen MEDICAL to improve the lives of the underprivileged. This community keeps growing because not only because of its technical capabilities, but also because of the free software philosophy behind it.

- Vendor independence : We, as a community, can NOT depend on a single vendor or group of vendors for the future of MEDICAL (or any free software solution for that matter). MEDICAL does not belong to Thymbra. MEDICAL is part of a non-for-profit organization, GNU Solidario, which can not be bought or fall into speculators hands. MEDICAL is a public good.

- Back to the roots : We need to get back to the origins of Free Software. As I said, this is not about only "open source", but about community and ethics.

I believe that today we have the perfect scenario of freedom of choice, vendor independence, no lock-in policies of any type, community and evolution. These factors guarantee the sustainability of MEDICAL for the current and all the next installations around the world.

We will of course keep on developing MEDICAL so it will have the same functionality in all the environments (OpenERP, Tryton, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD...).

Today is a great day for MEDICAL and for Free Software.

MEDICAL : Enhanced Neonatology and Newborn Identification

There is a new module for pediatrics, which will cover the existing neonatology and all the other pediatric information.

Newborn wristbands
To maximize security and identification of the newborn, MEDICAL assigns a newborn ID, and allows to print the four identification bands to place it on the baby and mother's wrists and ankles.

The identification band will have a unique barcode that can be checked by the institution security personnel at anytime.

New Pediatrics Module and enhanced Neonatology information

The new pediatrics module will cover the neonatal , infancy, toddler and teenage information.

The neonatology process has been extensively revised, with many new indicators and functionality, such as :

Multiple APGAR tests
Automatic APGAR score
Newborn reflexes,
Improved sign and symptoms
New newborn tests

The antenatal information and the puerperium remains in the gynecology / obstetrics module.

Because of their geographical locations, Canary Islands links Africa, Europe and the Americas, while Brazil concentrates on the Latin America reality.

Luis Falcón is pleased to announce the Medical 1.0.0 release. After more than 2 years we get the first general availability version of Medical, the Free Health and Hospital Information System.

Thanks to all of you who have committed your talent and your time to make a system that can improve the lives of people all over the world, no matter their economical status.

Medical is now installed in many places and countries, from Primary care centers in Argentina, to the United Nations University, to Hospitals in Indonesia or Africa, to name only a few.

Now with the base system settled, we will start to add new functionality in the 1.1 (development) series. Many exciting features and specialities are coming this year : Pediatrics, ophthalmology, epidemiology, nutrition, oncology, cardiology, neurology .... all for free and available to all health professionals around the globe

Today MEDICAL optimizes the promotion of health and the prevention of the disease, by having a holistic view of the patient, her family, socioeconomic status, lifestyle and clinical history. It also allows the health center to manage its resources, and the ministry of health to improve the health campaigns. Used properly, MEDICAL is a great public health tool.

The United Nations University (UNU) has adopted MEDICAL

The United Nations University (UNU) has adopted MEDICAL

United Nations University - International Institute for Global Health (IIGH) ( http://www.unu.edu ) has joined the MEDICAL community. MEDICAL will offer them an online teaching resource for a Hospital Information System (HIS).

GNU Solidario and UNU are now working together in specific areas, such as the documentation process. GNU Solidario will also work with UNU in the installation of a demo server.

This is yet another great example of how free software can leverage the resources to help the developing countries. Many thanks to Mr Nurhizam Safie Mohd Satar who is leading the MEDICAL integration project at the United Nations University - International Institute for Global Health (IIGH).

This common effort will increase the amount of physicians using Free Software, and we will all benefit with their valuable feedback.

I take the opportunity to thank the United Nations and their Development Program - UNDP - ( http://www.undp.org) , since it's been supporting our mission since 2009. Este año la Sociedad Internacional de eHealth y Telemedicina (isfteh) nos invitó para celebrar IWEEE en Luxemburgo, en el marco de Medetel durante los días 6 al 8 de Abril del presente año.

IWEEE ya está dando frutos. Como ejemplo, el gobierno de Paraguay ha comenzado a migrar sus regiones sanitarias a software libre después de la segunda edición celebrada en Foz de Iguazú, Brasil.

Como en anteriores ediciones, habrá presentaciones, discusiones y mesas redondas llevadas a cabo por un grupo multi-disciplinario que nos relatarán la realidad de sus sociedades, y posibles medidas para mejorar la educación y salud de sus pueblos.

Kisiizi Hospital - to Implement Medical and OpenERP

Kisiizi Hospital is located in the Republic of Uganda in Western region near the boarder of DR congo. Kisiizi Hospital treats about 300,000 residents with the nearest hospital nearly 100 kilometers away, in Kabaale, it serves as a health haven for most residents who can barely afford pain killers.

With support from many well wishers from UK, the hospital also trains Nurses at the Nursing school, these in turn are employed at the hospital. The hospital generates its own power through a hydro power plant. Its capacity is 250 beds.

We at Geomaqs Technologies Ltd are helping the hospital implement a management Information System based on openerp.

We would like to adopt medical as a HIS/MRS. Are there any members who have functional modules for openerp 5.0.14, reply mokongo@geomaqs.com

El Hospital Académico Paramaribo es el hospital mas grande y moderno del Suriname.

El AZP fue fundado el 9 de marzo del 966 como un hospital central, transformándose en Hospital Académico Paramaribo en 1969, ganando así su estatus de Universidad.

La plantilla actual consta de cerca de 1700 trabajadores y el Hospital tiene una capacidad de 470 camas.

Cada año se hospitalizan unos 20.000 pacientes, mientras unos 176.000 pacientes ambulatoriales visitan el hospital.

The Academic Hospital Paramaribo chooses Medical

The Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) is the largest and most modern hospital in Suriname.

The AZP was founded march 9, 1966 as a central hospital and was changed into the Academic Hospital Paramaribo in 1969 gaining its university status. The current staff consists of about 1700 co-workers. The AZP Hospital has a 470 bed capacity.

On a yearly basis 20.000 patients are hospitalized, while about 176.0000 out-patients visit the hospital.

We greatly appreciate AZP commitment to Medical and support to our organization, GNU Solidario. We are working with AZP to initially provide specific functionality in pediatric care and cardiology. This is a clear example on how large hospitals can collaborate to Free software, where the rest of the world will also benefit.

Hospitales en Indonesia están utilizando Medical

El Hospital R.S. Griya Husada Madiun Hospital, en Madiun City (En la Provincia East Java Indonesia) es el ultimo hospital en Indonesia que ha empezado a utilizar Medical .

Es el tercer hospital en Indonesia que instala Medical este año.

Nos alegra mucho ver como varios centros de salud alrededor del mundo están utilizando el Software Libre para el beneficio de sus habitantes.

Queremos agradecerle a Riza Kurniawan, que es parte del equipo de Medical en Indonesia. Se ha encargado de la implementación en este hospital y ha realizado la traducción al Bahasa Indonesia.
